November, Gratitude, and Judy Wallis!

November is for giving thanks! October is the month of every birthday in my immediate family plus wedding anniversary so while I LOVE October, I am also pleased to close that yearly chapter and move into a month focused on gratitude. When I list all of my many blessings, Judy is definitely on the list. I have felt her influence my entire teaching career and I have known her for almost 20 years. Magical August

Kylene Beers is so many things to me. A friend, a colleague, a hero, a teacher, a truth-teller, and a mentor. This last year, I spent time with her and others in Waco at her summer retreat: Tyrolia. If you ever have time to do so, the retreat will leave you filled with inspiration and drive to do more for our children.  Kylene is an award-winning educator and the author of many books and articles focused on literacy. She has served in many roles including teacher in Alief ISD. Since then, she has become an internationally recognized authority in literacy education. May oh My!

 I cannot believe we already in May of 2021-almost halfway through this year. If my counting is correct this is the 10th installation of Cup of Capacity and this month's interview is a real treat.  Go here for the interview Longtime education leader Brenda Arteaga is currently the curriculum director for special populations in the Teaching and Learning Center, a division of the Harris County Department of Education. I met Brenda many years ago through friends but it was not until this last year filled with the pandemic and quaranteening that we have become close colleagues and friends. Brenda has a great story and is an example of someone who has not only built her own capacity, but is almost always found building the capacity of others.  She is a 28-year veteran educator who most recently served as superintendent of schools and assistant superintendent for academics at Southwest Schools in Houston.
