November is for giving thanks! October is the month of every birthday in my immediate family plus wedding anniversary so while I LOVE October, I am also pleased to close that yearly chapter and move into a month focused on gratitude. When I list all of my many blessings, Judy is definitely on the list. I have felt her influence my entire teaching career and I have known her for almost 20 years. There are a few things I have always known that I wanted for my life. I wanted to be a teacher and a principal. I wanted to be a wife and a mother. As I saw these wishes coming true, I had a new dream that I wanted just for myself and that was to obtain my doctorate degree. Today, I mailed out my final copy to my committee and I wanted to capture advice as I prepare for my defense in a few weeks. I even asked an online doctoral group for their advice to make sure I represented not only myself but other working mothers who might be in similar situations. Kylene Beers is so many things to me. A friend, a colleague, a hero, a teacher, a truth-teller, and a mentor. This last year, I spent time with her and others in Waco at her summer retreat: Tyrolia. If you ever have time to do so, the retreat will leave you filled with inspiration and drive to do more for our children.
